A través de esta controvertida figura Auchincloss construye un convincente retrato de las contradicciones de la clase dirigente americana durante la primera mitad del siglo XX.

El capitán Roberto Saviano recibe la orden de buscar en Nápoles y Roma unos cuadros para el rey Carlos Tercero. En tiempos de paz, en el verano de 1776, tiene además la misión de recoger en París, a un agente secreto y llevarlo a Madrid, en la corbeta Numancia, reparada en el puerto francés de Brest, tras un encontronazo naval con piratas ingleses. Los capitanes del rey español y de Francia, tendrán que enfrentarse a una de las armadas más potentes del planeta, Inglaterra, cuya invasión, al final, fracasa. Vencerán los hombres de Washington, con la ayuda franco-española. Sin embargo, el triunfo de los insurgentes anglo americanos pondrá en peligro el norte de Nueva España, tan extenso como deshabitado, deseosos de expandirse al este, cruzando el Mississipi. Gracias a Bernardo de Gálvez, morderán el polvo, mientras en el mar Caribe y las islas de Barlovento, las potencias se preparan para enfrentarse en cruentas batallas navales. Las armadas en lucha, pelearán también contra tormentas y huracanes; Santo Domingo, Jamaica, La Habana, y Veracruz, son parte de este escenario, donde el actor principal es, sin duda, con los capitanes del rey, la guerra.
